Police impersonator Arrested in Malmesbury

The police in Malmesbury have stopped a man posing as a police official in his tracks. The arrest took place on Wednesday, 11 January 2017 when a 30 year old man wanted to open an account at one of the retail stores in Malmesbury, and was reported to local police.

One of the clerks at the shop was vigilant enough to notice that the details on the man’s payslip did not correspond with that of the South African Police Service. The police were called and the suspect was brought to the police station for questioning. Upon further investigation it came to light that the man was in fact not a police official and that the documentation that he carried was that of a police constable currently working at Ravensmead SAPS, who is on leave.

The suspect also had in his possession an ID document with his photo on it, but which contained the details of the police official he was impersonating. A case of fraud was opened against the man, which is being investigated by Malmesbury SAPS. The 30 year old suspect will appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s court on Friday 2017-01-13.
