Our pursuit to seize unlicensed firearms in the province yielded positive outcomes when members attached to Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 38-year-old man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Dover Court, Lavender Hill.

On Saturday 4 July 2020 at about 20:40 the members were busy with stop and search operations in Lavender Hill due to sporadic shooting incidents that was reported in the area, when they saw the suspect. They stopped and searched him and found him to be in possession of .38 revolver with six rounds of ammunition.

The suspect appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today on the mentioned charges.

The same members arrested a 28-year-old male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition (.38 revolver with five rounds of ammunition) in Komlossy Street, Cafda, Retreat at about 02:30 on the morning of 6 July 2020.

Members were also busy with stop and search operations due to on-going gang related shootings in the area. The suspect will make a court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 7 July 2020.

In an unrelated matter on Sunday 5 July 2020 at about 13:00 a 23-yea-old male was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition in Red River Road, Manenberg.

Manenberg SAPS deployed crime prevention members to combat gang violence and gang activities through stop and searches. Whilst patrolling SAPS members saw a suspicious looking man walking in the road. He was stopped and searched and found to be in possession of a 9 mm pistol of which the serial number was removed and with six rounds of ammunition.

The 23-year-old male was arrested for the illegal possession of an unlicensed and prohibited firearm and ammunition and will be appearing in the Athlone Magistrates’ court once charged.
