Police arrest suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms and attempted murder

Continued efforts to combat gang violence in the Bishop Lavis policing precinct led to the arrest of a 19-year-old female for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Firethorn Street on Monday afternoon, 27 November 2023.

Members of Bishop Lavis police were busy with crime prevention operations when they noticed a female with a back pack on her back and upon noticing police presence, she started to run. The members gave chase and apprehended the female. Upon searching the back pack they found a firearm with ammunition in the bag.

The suspect will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court today.

In an unrelated intervention, members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed in Delft area, searched a premises in Eindhoven Street, Delft on Tuesday evening, 28 November 2023, and arrested a 31-year-old female when the members found firearm without a serial number hidden under a cupboard in the bedroom. She faces a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Furthermore the same members searched another premises in Eindhoven Street and confiscated a firearm without a serial number and ammunition and arrested a 27-year-old man for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile two suspects, both aged 25, were arrested for attempted murder which occurred in Madeira Street, Leiden, Delft on 25 November 2023, where suspects opened fire on the house.

The suspects are due to make their respective court appearances in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged.
