Suspected bank robbers arrested in Cape Town

Police in Cape Town arrested six alleged bank robbers during pre-dawn raids on Friday.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, said: “In meticulously carried out pre-dawn raids on Friday morning, members from the Hawks in the Western Cape in the company of SAPS’ Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Flying Squad, arrested six suspects, aged between 32 and 48, amongst them a female branch manager, for their alleged role in a bank robbery that took place in Kuilsrivier during 2014.”

The raids by the Hawks’ Serious and Violent Crime Unit centred around the Athlone area.

According to Ramovha: “It is alleged that during the morning of 2014-11-12 an unknown number of armed suspects forced their way into the local bank premises with the incoming staff in Kuilsrivier, held them hostage before they fled with over R500,000 in cash.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Kuilsrivier Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges relating to armed robbery with aggravating circumstances. Investigations were continuing.
