The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team’s relentless efforts to curb the plundering of marine living resources is gaining more momentum following the arrest of a 22 year old suspect for possession of abalone to the value of approximately R135 000.00.

The Hawks and SAPS Flying Squad along with officials from the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) as well as Cape Town City traffic officials reacted on information about a vehicle transporting abalone on 25 July 2019.

The vehicle was spotted driving on N1 towards Cape Town, upon stopping it and conducting a search in line with the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA), fresh and wet abalone was seized and suspect arrested.

The case against the suspect who is facing charges of contravening the Marine Living Resources Act, is due to be heard at the Kuils River Magistrate’s court on 29 July 2019.
