HIJACKING – A 31-year-old paramedic from Khayelitsha in Cape Town was arrested on Saturday for allegedly hijacking an ambulance.
Two paramedics were attending to a patient in an ambulance in front of the fire station in Khayelitsha at about 11pm on Friday night when two men armed with knives entered the ambulance, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.
The driver of the ambulance fought back and managed to escape to get assistance. The men took the ambulance and drove it to D Block in Site C, Khayelitsha. They robbed the remaining paramedic of her cellphones and left the ambulance, fleeing from the scene.
The paramedic drove the ambulance back to the fire station and reported the matter to police.
“The determination and dedication of Captain Bavuma led to the swift arrest of the suspect. The one suspect was identified as a paramedic working in Mitchells Plain. One suspect is yet to be arrested. A case of carjacking is being investigated.”
The arrested paramedic would appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Rwexana said.
