Two suspects were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm during operation ‘Clean-Up’ on 11 October 2022. The Economic Infrastructure Task Team joined efforts with Law Enforcement members and Metro Police in a bid to rid Cape Flats of guns.

They conducted a stop and search in Betterlife, Philippi at around 09:00, when a white delivery vehicle approached and stopped. Two men came out of the vehicle and went inside a spaza shop, leaving the vehicle opened.

The officers followed them inside the shop and searched them and they found a 9mm pistol with full magazine and rounds of ammunition. The suspects were arrested, and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s court, once they have been charged.

In an unrelated incident, Elsies River SAPS members responded to a shooting in progress at Justine Road, Clarke Estate on Tuesday, 11 October 2022.

Upon arrival, they found two suspects who started shooting at them. The members returned fire and the suspects fled on foot with members in pursuit.

One of the suspects was wounded in his upper leg and apprehended. The police confiscated a 9mm pistol with 8 rounds of ammunition.

Once charged, he will make his court appearance in the Good Wood Magistrate’s court.
