More illegal firearms recovered, Mitchells Plain

SAPS members unrelenting commitment to eliminate the presence of illegal firearms in our communities yielded positive results with the arrest of two suspects.

On 11 August 2020, at around 21:30, members attached to the Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit were busy conducting crime prevention duties in Buttress Street, Tafelsig when they acted on information about a male suspect who had run into a house carrying a firearm.

Upon arrival at the address, members found the suspect and conducted a search of the premises. They discovered a silver 9mm short firearm with several rounds of ammunition. A 27-year-old suspect was arrested and is facing a possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition charge.

Meanwhile, about an hour later at approximately 22:30, members of Mitchells Plain CPU were conducting crime prevention duties in Plantasie Street, Tafelsig when they noticed a man who started running when he saw the police vehicle approaching.

Members gave chase and saw the suspect throwing an object onto the roof of a residence. When police retrieved the item they found that it was a CZ 75 pistol. Several rounds of ammunition were also recovered. A 24-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Both suspects appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on 12 August 2020.
