CAPE TOWN – The Mitchells Plain Safety & Development Forum has launched one of the first “Safe Zones” in the area, a targeted crime-fighting programme aimed at addressing high rates of gang violence, drug-related crime, and youth unemployment.

The initiative brings together provincial authorities and civil society to create safer public spaces through accessible local support hubs offering youth development, psychosocial support, crime prevention, and community empowerment.

“Our goal is to restore hope, strengthen resilience and create safer opportunities for young people to thrive,” a spokesperson for the Mitchells Plain Safety & Development Forum said. “We will closely monitor the impact of this pilot project and if successful we intend to expand this model to other communities. This pilot project will run for the next 6 months.”

The programme is supported by the Western Cape government. Community leaders have identified specific “hotspots” within Mitchells Plain as the initial focus.

“When we start looking at the safe zones, it is areas in Mitchells Plain that we’ve identified as what we call hotspots,” the spokesperson explained. “So we need to start reclaiming our spaces back… utilizing some of these facilities that are out there.”

One key element is the establishment of a digital centre at a local venue, allowing youth to access online services without traveling long distances.

“A digital centre where youth don’t have to travel another 5 kilometres to go and update a CV or upload a CV. They could come like literally 2 minutes away from their houses,” the spokesperson added.

A youth representative who recently joined the task team said the programme would tackle root causes of violence and instability. “We are opening the IT centre soon,” the youth representative said. “I believe that for the youth we need skills and development, and that will steer them away from crime and gangsterism and all of those activities that’s happening in our communities.”

The representative continued: “This initiative will not only spark hope but it will spark opportunity for the youth. Within this community, lack of opportunity is huge, unemployment is really big, and lack of education. Children from the age of 15 drop out of school due to family issues at home and they look at alternatives such as gangsterism and drug smuggling. I feel like this project is going to bring hope and opportunity to say that there is hope out there.”

Community leaders acknowledged that reclaiming Mitchells Plain from gangs will not happen overnight, but said the Safe Zones initiative is a step toward restoring hope, safety, and opportunity in the community.
