Police visibility and crime prevention patrols led to the arrest of a 37 year old man on charges under the Living Marine Resources Act. On 03 May 2019 at about 19:15, members attached to Table View SAPS Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) was doing patrols on Malibongwe Drive in Table View when they spotted a white Hyundai H1 failing to stop at a red traffic light.

The SAPS members pulled up next to the vehicle and saw boxes wrapped in plastic in the vehicle. The driver was requested to stop the vehicle and to answer on the contents of the sealed boxes. When he could not account for its contents the members checked the 35 boxes and found it filled with a total of 13 042 shucked dried abalone. The estimated street value of the abalone must still be determined.

The arrested suspect are to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Monday 6 May 2019, on the mentioned charges.
