Observant Mitchells Plain SAPS members who were conducting crime prevention patrols in Dassie Street, Eastridge, Mitchells Plain arrested a 36-year-old man who was in possession of an illegal firearm.

On Tuesday, 2 March 2021 at about 06:00 the members were busy with patrols when they spotted a suspicious male. They stopped and searched him and found a homemade firearm in his possession. The suspect was arrested on charges of possession of an illegal firearm.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court once charged.

In an unrelated matter, members attached to the Crime Prevention Unit in Atlantis acted swiftly after a voice clip was received of a woman encouraging the community to partake in public violence. Thorough investigation led to the recognition of the woman’s voice and she was identified and tracked down.

On Tuesday, 2 March 2021 at about 17:00 the 46-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Atlantis police cells on charges of incitement to commit public violence.

Once charged, the suspect will appear before the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court. SAPS have a zero tolerance policy towards anyone who incite any type of violence.
