Police in the Cape Town Cluster partnered with other role-players and arrested ten suspects on the morning of 1 April 2022, for various crimes committed in Maitland during an operation which focused on non-ferrous metal crime.

Among the arrests that were made, three suspects were held for the contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act, two for being undocumented citizens, two for the possession of drugs, two for possession of stolen copper wire and one for dealing in liquor.

In addition the operations also led to the confiscation of liquor and a variety of drugs, and 1500 liters of alcohol.

With the aim on stolen copper cables and damage to infrastructure, the operation resulted in the seizure of various copper wire identified as City of Cape Town, Prasa and Transnet property.

All ten suspects will remain in custody until their court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates court on Monday, 4 April 2022.

The destruction of infrastructure and the theft of non-ferrous metal are high on our priority list of the Western Cape police and every endeavour will be made to apprehend those responsible, so that they can face their day in a court of law.
