A 22-year-old suspect is in police custody after the Maitland Flying Squad recovered a hijacked vehicle and found illegal firearms in Nyanga on Saturday evening, 17 January 2026.

While recovering a different hijacked vehicle in the Lloyds area, officers spotted a passing Toyota Hilux. Its registration number matched details from a general broadcast about a vehicle hijacked earlier in Mfuleni.

The suspects in the Hilux then collided with a house fence, jumped out, and fled. After a chase, officers arrested one suspect.

A search of the Hilux revealed two 9mm firearms. One of the firearms had no serial number. A jammer device was also found inside the vehicle.

The 22-year-old suspect has been detained at Nyanga SAPS on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged.
