LAVENDER HILL — The family of one of the victims in the recent Lavender Hill mass shooting is demanding urgent changes to the justice system after unknown assailants opened fire on a weekend gathering, leaving five people dead and three others injured.

The deadly attack occurred on a Saturday evening when gunmen targeted a family braai in the Cape Town suburb. Among the deceased was a 31-year-old man. His relatives, who are deeply involved in local community outreach, expressed their profound shock and devastation over the loss.

Speaking out on the tragedy, family spokespersons highlighted their extensive community work, which includes running a local feeding kitchen and supporting neighborhood children. They described the emotional toll of seeing their son killed in his own backyard, emphasizing that they never imagined their neighborhood would become so dangerous that they could not even safely host a gathering in their own homes.

Beyond their grief, the family is calling for drastic reforms within the criminal justice system. They heavily criticized current bail structures, noting that suspects can commit murder and be released on as little as R300 bail, only to return and reoffend.

Furthermore, while acknowledging the military deployment in the area under Operation Prosper to combat gang-related violence and extortion, the family argued that the current police presence remains insufficient. They pointed to the continuous flooding of firearms into the Cape Flats as a core issue that needs to be addressed to ensure community safety.

The Lavender Hill mass shooting is not an isolated tragedy. The community has been reeling from a surge in violence, with several individuals gunned down in separate incidents over the past 10 days. The family also revealed a heartbreaking history of loss, noting they have lost seven cousins to gun violence over the years, including two who were killed in a recent double murder in the area.

A police spokesperson confirmed that authorities had no prior intelligence to suggest the family gathering would be targeted. The spokesperson stated that the attack could not have been foreseen, as the victims were simply engaged in normal daily activities and there was no warning of a specific threat against the family.

While the exact motive for the massacre remains unknown, investigators have not ruled out gang-related involvement.

As of the latest update, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities are actively pursuing the investigation and have announced a R100,000 reward for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
