Since July 2017 until the end of June 2018, more than 925 protest incidents occurred compared to the 265 of the previous year.

Mayoral Committee Member of Safety and Security of the Cape Town City Council, JP Smith, confirmed the protests and related land occupations during the release of the statistics for the said period.

Serious damage was also caused to the infrastructure of buildings and vehicles of the council.

Another worrying issue is the increase in attacks on metro police members, which showed an increase of 180%.
