KNYSNA, Western Cape — A deadly Knysna shootout has left a 50-year-old police captain and a 38-year-old suspect dead, marking a tragic escalation in the investigation into the recent murders of prominent local figures. The incident occurred during an early-morning operation by a Provincial Tactical Response Team deployed to the town following the assassinations of former Knysna mayor and ANC ward 8 councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, former ward 7 councillor Mandla Matiwani, and taxi leader Mandla Tshoholo.
The confrontation unfolded in the Sewende Laan informal settlement, where law enforcement was actively conducting an operation to retrieve illegal firearms connected to the ongoing murder probes. According to officials on the scene, the situation rapidly escalated when the suspect opened fire on the police team, prompting return fire that fatally wounded both the suspect and the police captain.
During a media briefing at the scene, Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi confirmed the casualties and the recovery of two firearms from the suspect’s position. These weapons are now being processed as critical evidence as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Lieutenant General Dyantyi emphasized that additional law enforcement members are being deployed to the area to enhance visibility and combat operations, ensuring the continued safety of the Knysna community.
Addressing the root cause of the violence, the Police Commissioner highlighted the alarming prevalence of illegal firearms in the area, noting that they have become the weapon of choice in these targeted killings. He issued a direct appeal to the public, urging anyone with information about illegal weapons or individuals possessing them to come forward immediately.
“Police cannot do this alone,” Lieutenant General Dyantyi stated, emphasizing that the community must act as the “eyes and ears” on the ground. He warned that without collaborative efforts to address the circulation of illegal firearms, law enforcement will be unable to prevent further unnecessary loss of life in the region.
The investigation into the shootout and the broader series of political murders continues as authorities work to dismantle the networks fueling the violence in the Garden Route town.
