The annual Knysna Oyster Festival has once again proven to be a vital economic lifeline for the town during the quiet winter months, drawing thousands of visitors and supporting local charities.

Lungiswa Goya, Manager of Local Economic Development at the Knysna Municipality, emphasized the festival’s importance in stimulating the local economy. “Over the last couple of years, we really struggled with numbers, but this year we saw a 30% increase in participation, with over 2,000 entries,” Goya said.

The festival, which featured a mix of sporting events, culinary competitions, and entertainment, attracted visitors from across South Africa, including KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape. Cycling events, a major highlight, saw enthusiastic participation, while the Forest Marathon alone drew around 7,000 athletes.

Beyond sports, lifestyle events like the Oyster Shucking Competition and Dessert Fair were crowd favorites. A special addition this year was the South African Army Band, which performed at various community events and the closing ceremony.

Festival-goers praised the vibrant atmosphere. “The whole bicycle competition was amazing—a lot of effort went into it, and everyone’s having a thrilling time,” one attendee remarked.

A key aspect of the festival is its commitment to giving back. Proceeds from the event support numerous charities in and around Knysna, reinforcing its role as both an economic driver and a force for community good.

With record attendance and diverse attractions, this year’s Oyster Festival has set a high bar, ensuring Knysna remains a must-visit winter destination.
