In a swift and coordinated response to a fatal smash-and-grab attack, a joint operation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and City of Cape Town law enforcement has led to the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect.
The arrest follows the murder of 64-year-old Karin van Aardt from Bloemfontein. The incident occurred on Friday evening while Mrs. van Aardt and her husband were travelling along Jakes Gerwel Drive en route to Vredenburg. According to reports, suspects smashed the window of their vehicle in an attempted robbery. During the ensuing scuffle, Mrs. van Aardt was stabbed. She was rushed to hospital by her distraught husband but was later certified dead.
Following the disturbing incident, integrated police deployments worked around the clock to identify and trace those responsible. Acting on vital intelligence, officials apprehended the suspect in the Langa area. He was questioned by detectives and has since been charged with murder and aggravated robbery.
The arrested Langa resident is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 11 December 2025. Police indicate that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are anticipated.
This arrest comes as integrated law enforcement deployments have been intensified at identified hotspots across the city, in line with the Safer Festive Season operational plan. With increased holiday traffic and public activity, authorities are bolstering efforts to combat crime.
Law enforcement has issued an earnest plea to local communities to collaborate with police by providing any information that could help prevent similar crimes and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
