Residents of the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa are urgently calling for community assistance as they prepare for severe rainfall expected this weekend. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain and strong winds across Cape Town, raising fears of flooding in vulnerable areas.
Community Fears and Struggles
With homes built from fragile materials and inadequate drainage, Joe Slovo residents say they are at high risk of flooding. A local resident, expressed deep concerns about the impending weather.
“Our main fear is the heavy rain,” he said. “We build with the cheapest materials because many of us are unemployed. When it rains, the water stands still—there’s no drainage. We’re trying to dig trenches to divert water, but it’s difficult.”
The settlement, located in a low-lying area, has historically suffered from flooding during heavy downpours. Residents say their roofs leak, children miss school, and commuting becomes nearly impossible when roads turn into rivers.
Authorities and Aid Groups on Standby
Disaster risk management teams and provincial authorities remain on high alert, monitoring the situation. The Gift of the Givers, a humanitarian aid organization, has confirmed it is prepared to assist affected communities.
“We’ve already received calls from several areas and are conducting assessments,” a representative said.
Residents Take Matters Into Their Own Hands
With limited resources, Joe Slovo’s community members are banding together to mitigate damage. Some are reinforcing roofs with plastic sheeting, while others dig makeshift drainage channels. However, without proper infrastructure, their efforts may not be enough.
“We’re trying by all means, but it’s hard when you don’t have money,” he explained.
As Cape Town braces for the cold front and heavy rains, the plight of Joe Slovo’s residents highlights the ongoing challenges faced by informal settlements during extreme weather. Authorities urge the public to stay vigilant and assist where possible.
