Police members in Hermanus were kept busy on 26 March 2018, trying to quell violent incidents that saw part of the satellite police station set alight, three SAPS vehicles damaged and one member injured in several run-ins between the police and protesters who wanted to illegally occupy land in the area.

Several shops were looted and buildings also damaged. In response police arrested 26 people for public violence. Additional police deployments comprising members from neighbouring stations, public order police and members of the K9 unit are monitoring the situation.

Mediation talks between community representatives, the municipality, human rights commission and police took place this evening, 26 March 2018. A follow up meeting with the MEC for human settlements is scheduled for 27 March 2018.

A further report from EMR Private Ambulance states: Whale Coast Recycling got burned down, Zwelithle police station got torched, a vehicle got torched in Beach Club, Several businesses got vandalised, schools closed early and the school holiday just started 2 days earlier,the town looks quiet as most businesses are closed, the Whale Coast Mall is closed.
