The Hout Bay protests have lasted three days and, as elsewhere in the country during protests, it has developed into full-blown crime.

Vehicles have been overturned and a mobile kitchen damaged. Zinc structures were demolished and thrown into streets which made any movement impossible. The police had to intervene to prevent an old-age home from being attacked.

According to JP Smith of the Cape Town City Council, people moved from street to street and broke windows, while unconfirmed reports of looting of shops, especially liquor stores were received.

A mobile unit of the Metro police has been completely destroyed, and every possible member of the Metro Police is on the scene to try and control the situation.
