Members of the Flying Squad responded to an armed robbery and hijacking in the Athlone area. Upon arrival in Carnie Street, Rylands, the members were joined by other police members and were stopped by members of the public, neighbourhood watch members and other witnesses who had seen the suspects.

Four men in a red Ford Focus motor vehicle had approached the complainant and robbed him of his pistol and white Isuzu LDV.

The suspects fled the scene with two vehicles and were involved in an accident with the Red Ford Focus, which was later discovered to have false registration plates. It was also discovered that the car had been reported hijacked at Kleinvlei last month.

The two suspects aged 36 and 39 were apprehended in Carnie Road, Rylands where the complainant’s firearm was also found. Another suspect was seen fleeing towards the cemetery in Johnson Road where another firearm was found hidden in one of the graves.

The complainant’s vehicle was later found abandoned in Langa. An undisclosed amount of money was also robbed from the complainant.
