In our efforts to reduce the circulation of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, Khayelitsha police have arrested two suspects for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition as well as for the possession of a hijacked vehicle.

Police were on vehicle patrols on Friday 22 June 2018, in Pama road, Khayelitsha. At approximately 20:00 they spotted a white Hyundai Accent with three occupants. As police tried to flag down the vehicle, the suspects sped off instantly.

As the vehicle chase ensued the suspects lost control of the vehicle and hit a fixed object. Police managed to apprehend two suspects whereas one suspect managed to escape. Inside the vehicle police recovered a .22 special revolver, loaded with one live round of ammunition, and two spent cartridges.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been hijacked in the Lingelethu West area earlier in June 2018.

Both suspects, aged 31 and 34 respectively, have been detained and charged for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and a second charge of possession of a hijacked vehicle was added.

They are expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 June 2018.
