Heinz Park home invasion and murder, 2 accused sentenced

On 18 October 2022 Wynberg Regional Court handed down hefty sentences to Mark Julies (30) and his accomplice Mark Johnson (31) for housebreaking with the intent to rob, attempted rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of a 23-year-old female.

This comes after their conviction on 13 July 2022.

The two accused were arrested in 2016 following the murder and housebreaking which occurred at Heinz Park in Nyanga, Cape Town on 25 May 2016.

It was reported that the deceased’s lifeless body was found by her brother. Her decomposed body was discovered with multiple stab wounds to the neck.

Accused 1, Mark Julies was sentenced as follows:

•Count 1: Housebreaking with intent to rob: Eight years’ imprisonment.
•Count 2: Robbery with Aggravating circumstances: 12 years’ imprisonment.
•Count 4: Murder: 22 years’ imprisonment.
•All three counts are to run concurrently and he will effectively 22 years’ direct imprisonment.

Accused 2, Marco Johnson was found guilty on four counts.

On count one, two and four he was sentenced the same as accused one and he was also additionally found guilty on count three which is attempted rape wherein he was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. All four counts will run concurrently and he will effectively serve 22 years’ direct imprisonment.

The Acting Provincial Head Brigadier Piet Bergh commended the members for the good work that led to the successful prosecution of the accused.
