The Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Bellville have on 07 March 2024 arrested a 43-year-old suspect on a warrant of arrest for theft and damage to essential infrastructure.

It is reported that during March 2020 a break-in occurred at MTN Towers whereby twelve (12) batteries valued at R50 400-00 were stolen in Kuilsriver and Macassar respectively. Furthermore a smart lock worth R3500-00 was damaged during the incident.

On 12 March 2020 two suspects were apprehended in Kuilsriver in possession of tower batteries believed to be stolen from MTN Tower. They both appeared at Somerset West Magistrate’s Court and were granted R3000.00 bail each.

Through investigation one of the previously arrested suspects was subsequently linked to another crime where MTN Tower batteries were stolen in Philippi. Upon discussion with the Director of Public Prosecutions, a warrant of arrest was applied for and was issued. It was successfully executed on 07 March 2024.

The suspect will appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on 08 March 2024.
