The Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Gugulethu has expressed deep concern after learning that one of the two suspects sought by police in connection with a mass shooting that killed seven people this past weekend had only recently been released from custody.
The deadly attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Kanana informal settlement, where seven men—aged between 26 and 30—were ambushed while socializing in a kitchen. Authorities believe the shooting was linked to extortion-related violence.
Repeat Offender Linked to Previous CPF Murder
The CPF revealed that one of the suspects currently being sought by police was previously implicated in the murder of Lulama Dinginto, the former deputy chairperson of the Gugulethu CPF. Dinginto was gunned down in Gugulethu in December 2023.
“One of the perpetrators now being sought in this matter was involved in the killing of the late deputy chairperson of the CPF,” a forum representative said. “We are frightened and wondering how he was released—just a week before committing this kind of act. The community is scared, worried, and frustrated with the justice system.”
The CPF’s statement highlights growing unease over suspects being released only to allegedly reoffend, raising questions about the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in curbing violent crime.
Ongoing Violence and Extortion Crisis
The Kanana massacre is one of several multiple-casualty shootings that have shaken the Cape Flats in recent weeks. Provincial authorities have condemned the surge in violent crime, acknowledging challenges in confiscating illegal firearms.
“While work is underway to remove guns from our streets, too many firearms and ammunition still end up in criminals’ hands,” officials stated.
In response to the escalating extortion crisis, a multi-sectoral anti-extortion summit was recently held to address its impact on the province’s economy and critical services. Stakeholders pledged a stronger collaborative approach involving law enforcement, community organizations, and businesses to dismantle extortion networks.
“We are establishing a dedicated structure to focus on extortion and improve data-sharing,” authorities said. However, they admitted that the South African Police Service (SAPS) continues to face resource and personnel shortages.
Police Pursue Leads
Police say they are following all leads to track down the two suspects believed to have crucial information about the Kanana shooting.
“We are committed to making a breakthrough in this case,” a police spokesperson said.
As the investigation continues, Gugulethu residents remain on edge, calling for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
