A 29 year old male was arrested on the night of Sunday 26 January 2020, by members attached to Steenberg SAPS after they found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession. The members were conducting stop and search operations in St Alexander Circle, Lavender Hill.

A body search was conducted, and a silver .38 special revolver firearm with rounds of ammunition were confiscated. The suspect is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 27 January 2020, for possession of unlicensed firearm with ammunition.

On Sunday, 26 January 2020 at about 09:10, members of Mitchells Plain SAPS Proactive Team were busy with stop and search operations in Charley Close, Industrial Area, Beacon Valley when they received information about a male with a firearm in his possession. When the police searched the suspect, they found an imitation firearm in his possession. Police arrested a 24 year old male. The suspect faces a charge of possession of imitation firearm and resisting arrest. He is expected to appear in court once charged.

On Saturday, 25 January 2020 at about 05:00, members of Mitchells Plain SAPS were busy attending to complaints, when they received information about a shooting incident in Buffalo Street, Eastridge. Upon arrival in the street, members noticed a male who acted suspicious when he noticed police. They approached him and searched the area. The members found a Norinco Star firearm, with serial number removed, a magazine and nine 9mm rounds in his possession. Police arrested a 19 year old male. The suspect faces a charge of possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in court once charged.

Meanwhile in Manenberg, police saw a suspicious male in Tambo Village in the early hours of 27 January 2020, at about 01:10. Members approached him, a body search was conducted and 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition were found in his possession. A suspect aged 18 was arrested and rounds of ammunition were seized. The suspect is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon for illegal possession of ammunition.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata commended the members for this confiscations and arrests in the fight against gangsterism. She stated that the removal of firearms and ammunition and combating of gangsterism remains a high priority of SAPS.
