Fraud and corruption: Seven arrested at license testing centre, CT

The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Transport have arrested seven suspects for alleged corruption at Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha testing centre.

The seven, a male security guard and six female driver’s license examiners allegedly recruited and charged varying amounts for learners and driving licenses. These corrupt activities occurred between January 2015 and October 2018.

No less than 34 suspects including 9 examiners have so far been apprehended in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces to address the fraudulent issuing of roadworthy certificates. These arrests sparked further investigations which linked to the arrests of the seven suspects today.

Previously Clive Vernon Scheepers (42), who is an admin clerk, attached to the Lingelethu West testing Centre was arrested on 1 November 2018 for similar charges bringing the total arrested suspects to eight from the same testing centre.

More arrests have not been ruled out and those who obtained fraudulent licenses will not be spared from prosecution pending the ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the seven suspects aged between 31 and 44 are expected to appear at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face charges of fraud and corruption.
