Police members from Mitchell’s Plain have been awarded with certificates of recognition for their contribution in solving the rape and murder of six year old, Stacey Adams in 2018. She was initially reported missing on June 23 and later found murdered.

A search party comprising police, neighbourhood watch members and volunteers was launched subsequently. On 22 May 2019, the Western Cape High Court has sentenced 25 year old Christopher Brown to four life sentences for murder, two counts of rape and assault.

Brown, was also convicted and sentenced for the murder of his former girlfriend, Thulisa Lavisa in Khayelitsha in 2015. Mitchell’s Plain police who initially investigated a case of a missing person came under attack when community members burnt the house in which the accused lived. Police were inside the dwelling at the time it was petrol bombed busy with the search.

At the certificate handing over ceremony, Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Khombinkosi Jula reiterated the importance of handling reports of missing persons with the urgency required. “In a Province where crimes against women and children are so prevalent, every minute matters. No complainant must be turned away from a police station. Communities are also urged to report missing persons immediately”, says Lt General Jula. He urged parents and child minders to know the whereabouts of children at all times.
