The determination by the members attached to Maitland Flying Squad to stop the illegal distribution and usage of firearms in the commission of serious and violent crime, once again paid off as members arrested seven suspects for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition while they simultaneously, foiled what is believed to be a retaliation attack following the attempt on the life of one of the seven suspect, a week ago.
On Friday evening, 20 September 2024, the members responded to intelligence received of possible firearms which are kept in a vehicle in the Tableview area. The members spotted the vehicle, a VW T-Cross and a Mercedes Benz parked in Ringwood Drive in Tableview. Upon approach of the members, one of the seven suspects who stood outside the vehicles, tried to flee to evade arrest, but members quickly caught up and arrested the seven suspects between the ages of 28 and 36 of which one suspect is a female.
Members discovered and seized an AK-47 rifle with 28 rounds and an Uzi semi-automatic gun with 25 rounds of ammunition, found in their possession. The seven remain in custody and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ court for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, once charged.
Meanwhile, during the same evening, members attached to the Flying Squad arrested two suspects aged 32 and 25 in Raymond Malabar Crescent in Mandela Park, Harare after they were found in possession of a hijacked Chevy Spark which was hijacked earlier in the evening.
They face a charge of possession of hijacked vehicle and are scheduled to appear in court once they have been charged.
