A man who claimed he was on his way to buy drugs in Khayelitsha before police arrested him, led the officers to a home where they uncovered – among others – explosives, police said on Thursday.

This led to the arrest of five other male suspects.

Western Cape police’s Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said the arrests and discovery took place on Thursday morning, at about 01:45.

“While tracing wanted suspects in Khayelitsha, [police] spotted three suspicious males at C-Section in Site C, Khayelitsha. As police approached, the suspects started to run in different directions,” said Rwexana.

Police caught one of the suspects who then led them to the house he said from which he was going to purchase drugs.

“Police searched the house and recovered a 9mm pistol loaded with 14 rounds,” said Rwexana.

Investigating further, police found an empty AK47 rifle magazine and a pistol magazine which was also empty.

Further investigation led police to another house in the same section where they found four occupants.

Here, police recovered an explosive device and 16 rounds.

The five male suspects arrested – between the ages of 23 and 34 years old – would all appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court facing charges related to the illegal possession of explosives, firearms, and ammunition.
