Firearms and gangsterism: Police recover 6 firearms, Elsies River

Police endeavours to root out the proliferation of illegal firearms and gangsterism in the Elsies River area resulted in good successes.

Three firearms and ammunition were recovered during a search that was conducted at a residence in the early hours of Friday morning at about 02:30 in Weldra Street in Clarke Estate, Elsies River. Members attached to Provincial Anti-Gang Unit acted on a tip-off about firearms hidden at the address.

Members went to the house and during the search they recovered firearms hidden on the ground at the back of the yard. Members had to dig a hole in order to get to the firearms.

Police recovered a Taurus 357 Magnum Revolver, a Lama short Revolver, a PA 63.9 MM Pistol and an assortment of 359 rounds of ammunition. All three firearms’ serial numbers were filed off.

A 28-year-old suspect was arrested

Meanwhile members attached to the Nyanga Cluster Reaction Team also recovered three imitation firearms in Bestenbier Road in Elsies River. Members received information about firearms hidden at the premises and during the search recovered the three imitation firearms hidden on the roof of an old Combi.

A 28-year-old suspect was also arrested.

Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile applauded the members for removing prohibited firearms from the communities.
