TOUWS RIVER, WESTERN CAPE — A fatal bus accident in the Western Cape has claimed 16 lives after a passenger bus overturned on the N1 highway near Touws River in the early hours of the morning. The devastating crash, which involved a bus carrying 73 occupants, has triggered a massive emergency and recovery response in the region.
According to Western Cape Provincial Traffic Chief Maxine Bezuidenhout, the tragic incident transpired just before 1:00 AM. The bus was transporting South African holidaymakers from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape. As the vehicle entered the Touws River area, the driver reportedly swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle that was emerging from a side road. This evasive maneuver subsequently caused the heavy bus to overturn.
The crash resulted in devastating casualties, with 16 passengers losing their lives. Bezuidenhout confirmed that the bus driver sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Approximately 30 other passengers are also hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the overturning. Some survivors at the scene were noted to be too traumatized to speak to the media immediately following the incident.
Emergency and recovery operations are actively continuing at the site. Because the wreckage of the bus came to rest off the main carriageway, the N1 highway was not entirely blocked, though authorities noted it would be closed periodically to facilitate the safe recovery of the vehicle.
The bus operator, Badela Trans, has been contacted regarding the incident and has made arrangements for the recovery of the vehicle, dispatching a tow truck to the scene. Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) remains on-site to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal bus accident.
