SAPS endeavours to break the back of extortion of business owners and individuals in this province landed five suspects behind bars on the morning of 15 December 2021, when members of Public Order Policing reacted on a tipoff in Gugulethu.

The information suggested that the occupants of two vehicles parked at a petrol filling station in NY1 are involved in extortion of businesses in the area.

The members were swift with their approach and searched both vehicles.

Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition, a card machine as well as cash were confiscated.

Five suspects, one female and four males between the ages of 30 and 45 were arrested and detained for the unlawful possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Once charged, they are expected to make their court appearances in Athlone.

We have reason to believe that the suspects have links to a local gang in the area notorious for extortion related crimes.
