Police management in the province lauded investigators for excellent work done that resulted in a hefty sentence being meted against the accused in numerous rape cases in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court recently.

This follows intensive investigation by the Oudtshoorn Family Violence, Child protection and Sexual offences unit into allegations of rape of two juveniles who was 16 at the time of the rapes.

The victims, now 18-year-old, visited the man who is a pastor at a local church in Dysselsdorp during May 2018 to seek assistance regarding a personal matter. He took advantage of the situation and raped them on separate occasions. The one twin reported the incidents to her mother on 16 January 2019 who alerted the police. The other twin echoed the allegations.

Investigation led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Freddie Jafta (50) on various charges of rape. He was sentenced to 25-and-15 years imprisonment respectively, amounting to 40-years in total. The sentences will run concurrently.

Violence against women and children remains one of the priorities of the police. This conviction and sentence will send a clear message to perpetrators who see the personal circumstances of girls as an opportunity to violate them. They will face the full might of the law when such incidents are reported.
