The fight against drug trafficking in the Western Cape received a significant boost on Thursday, 2 October 2025, as the Regional Court in Ladismith handed down an eight-year prison sentence and a R25,000 fine to a convicted drug peddler.
The convict, 34-year-old Royston Rayners, was found guilty on a charge of dealing in drugs, stemming from a police operation in June of the previous year.
The case dates back to 06 June 2024, when members of the Ladismith Crime Prevention Unit established a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) along the R62 road between Ladismith and Barrydale. Acting on specific intelligence, officers were on the lookout for a silver Toyota Etios travelling towards Cape Town, which was suspected to be carrying a consignment of drugs destined for delivery in Ladismith.
The vehicle was identified, intercepted, and searched. A thorough inspection led to the discovery of drugs concealed inside the steering wheel compartment. Police confiscated 95.26 grams of tik and 500 mandrax tablets, with an estimated street value of R58,000. The vehicle was immediately seized, and all five occupants were arrested.
Following an investigation by the Western Cape Provincial Detectives for narcotics, Royston Rayners was successfully prosecuted for dealing in drugs.
In his sentencing, the court imposed an effective direct prison term. Rayners was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, of which four years are suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence. He was further sentenced to a fine of R25,000 or an additional five years’ imprisonment.
The outcome for the other occupants varied. The matter was withdrawn against three of the individuals, while the fourth suspect passed away before the conclusion of the trial.
In a further blow to criminal operations, the vehicle used in the commission of the offence has been officially forfeited to the State.
