The City of Cape Town’s energy teams have restored over 10,000 street lights in just 30 days, significantly improving safety and reducing service backlogs.

From 26 March to 25 April, more than 29,000 electricity-related requests were resolved. Alderman Zahidah Lindberg, Mayco Member for Energy, credited the progress to the Street Light Focus Initiative but warned that theft, vandalism, and illegal connections remain major challenges.

To combat infrastructure theft, the city is:

  • Replacing copper with less desirable materials

  • Converting overhead lines to underground systems

  • Expanding the “Protect Your Power” campaign

Regional breakdown:

  • East: 3,965 repairs

  • North: 2,395 repairs

  • South: 3,869 repairs

Lindberg urged residents to report cable theft promptly to minimize damage.
