Cape Town business robbery: 4 Cops released on R1k bail

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi has called for the immediate implementation of the departmental disciplinary processes in relation to the arrest and subsequent court appearance of four members for their alleged involvement in a business robbery in Cape Town.

The four which include a Warrant Officer, two Sergeants and one Constable were arrested on Sunday, 20 December 2020 by Milnerton Detectives. The members were traced back to a business robbery which took place on Saturday, 19 December 2020 at about 09:30 at a warehouse in Montagu Gardens in Milnerton. Further investigation into the matter also uncovered that the members allegedly utilized a state vehicle during the commission of the crime.

The members have appeared before the Cape Town Magistrates Court and are out on R1000 bail each.

The Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi has not only welcomed the arrest of the members but also condemned the alleged involvement of these members in this crime.

“The arrest of our own is disappointing to say the least, however the apprehension of our own members is indicative that criminality by members of the SAPS is neither condoned nor tolerated. We also applaud the members who effected the arrests for their bravery and standing up against crime and corruption by members within our ranks.

The call for decisive criminal and departmental steps should serve as a stern warning to all members of the SAPS to steer off all forms of criminality”.

While departmental disciplinary processes are due to unfold and investigations into the matter continue, police have also not ruled out further arrests in this matter.

The members are expected to appear in court again on 27 January 2020.
