WESTERN CAPE — Law enforcement officials executing a border policing operation at Cape Town International Airport successfully disrupted a suspected khat trafficking attempt over the weekend. The intervention resulted in the apprehension of a male traveler carrying a massive consignment of the illicit plant hidden within his baggage.

The incident unfolded on Saturday, 4 July 2026, at around 12:20. Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing unit were executing standard surveillance duties within the Central Terminal Building. Acting on specific intelligence regarding questionable behavior at a departure check-in area, officers approached a 46-year-old individual.

Upon engagement, the traveler granted permission for a search of his belongings. Investigators subsequently uncovered 50.7 kilograms of suspected khat. The substantial quantity of the substance was meticulously concealed across three separate suitcases.

Following the discovery, the man was taken into custody and transported to Ravensmead SAPS. He is currently being held on a formal charge of dealing in drugs. Authorities note that the financial street value of the confiscated shipment remains uncalculated while the investigative process continues.

The accused is slated to appear before the Bellville Magistrate’s Court for the first time on Monday, 6 July 2026.
