Western Cape SAPS management welcomes the judgement imposed on a suspect who shot and killed a taxi driver at the Bellville taxi rank on the 12 July 2018. The suspect opened fire at the taxi rank fatally injuring the victim.

After an intense investigation the suspect was arrested on the charge of murder.

On Tuesday, 19 October 2021 the Bellville Regional court sentenced the 45-year-old Phendile Velem to an effective 15 years imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile lauded the investigating officer for his commitment and dedication to ensure a safer community.
