A swift and thorough investigation into the violent assault of an off-duty police constable in Mossel Bay has led to four juveniles facing attempted murder charges in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ Court today.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 25 May 2025, when the 30-year-old officer, attached to the Da Gamaskop police station, and his partner were walking along Dalindyebo Street. At approximately 01:45, a group of men armed with an axe and other sharp objects attacked the constable, inflicting life-threatening injuries to his neck and head before fleeing the scene. The victim was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he remains in critical condition.

Police moved quickly to apprehend the suspects, resulting in the arrest of four individuals—aged between 16 and 19—later that same day. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to make their first court appearance today on charges of attempted murder.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, which remains under investigation.

In the meantime, the Western Cape police management has deployed internal SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) practitioners to provide psychosocial support to the injured officer and his family.

Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
