The attacks on hikers in the Cape hiking trails increase weekly.

The most recent incident occurred at the Silvermine Nature Reserve where two men injured five hikers in a knife and stone attack. A hiker is in a serious condition.

Hikers are now encouraged to carry some form of weapon to defend themselves against the gangster behavior.

The group, Table Mountain Watch, which is a crime prevention unit, reported that they make recommendations to SanParks about hikers’ safety which are ignored and that the parks department refuses to act proactively.
