In a bid to curb gang violence and gangs elicit activities within the Western Cape, the Anti Gang Unit was deployed to dispel the fears within gang ridden societies and instil trust with the communities in an intervention operation combating gang violence.
On Friday 26 October 2018, the new task team comprising of detectives and operational members was deployed within the Nyanga Cluster.
At approximately 16:00, members of the Anti Gang Unit were doing a search at a residence in Bonteheuwel Avenue, Bonteheuwel when they arrested a 44 year old suspect for the possession of ten mandrax tablets.
At approximately 17:00, members of Anti Gang Unit were doing foot patrols in Hillcress Court, Nooitgedacht when they saw a suspicious looking male who started running. Members pursued the man, caught him and searched him. A Norinco 9mm pistol with the serial number still intact, and two 9mm rounds were found in his possession. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Further investigation showed that the firearm was reported stolen in a Mitchells Plain case. The 41 year old year suspect is due to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court on Monday 29 October 2018.
At approximately 18:00, the members responded to a shooting incident in the Valhalla Park area, Bishop Lavis, where they immediately followed up information received on a suspect that was wanted on a murder case, and conducted a search of a premises in Eleanor Street, Bishop Lavis.
On conducting the search, they found a R5 assault rifle with 32 rounds loaded in a magazine with serial number filed off abandoned in a wendy house. The firearm was handed in at Bishop Lavis SAPS and will be sent for ballistic testing to check if it was used in the commission of any crimes. No arrest was made.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen KE Jula commended the Anti-Gang Unit members for their vigilance and commitment. General Jula says that:”illegal firearms cause terror and heart ache among communities in areas where violent crime is rife”, and he also thanked the community for the information that they are giving to police.
