Personnel of the civil rights organisation AfriForum were recently invited by the writer Ann Maree Barry to act as guest speakers in Calitzdorp during the launch of her latest book entitled Afvlerkvoëls.

Barry is a sergeant associated with the Calitzdorp police station and the book deals with the sadness of a farm attack and the trauma experienced afterwards.

During the launch, Thomas van Dalen, AfriForum Training Manager for Community Safety, Caty van der Merwe, Operational Manager of the AfriForum 911 Trauma Unit, and Jan Badenhorst, Head of AfriForum Community Structures for the Southern Region, addressed the audience.

The necessity of community involvement at the establishment of safety networks was especially emphasised. Van der Merwe also expanded on the trauma support AfriForum offered to victims of farm attacks. Barry intends on donating 30% of the income from her sales to AfriForum trauma unit.
