Concerted efforts to rid the Western Cape of the illegal possession of firearms and drugs in our communities saw the arrest of several suspects in crime prevention initiatives.

Members of the Anti-Gang Unit were busy with intelligence driven operations in the Parkwood area on Sunday evening 9 April 2023, following reports of shooting incidents that occurred in the area.

The members searched identified premises and confiscated a 9mm pistol, a homemade zip gun and ammunition. Two adult males were arrested for the firearm related offenses. The members also arrested two suspects who are wanted on attempted murder cases.

In an unrelated intervention the same members were busy with foot patrols in the Kakgat informal settlement in Athlone when they saw a male between the shacks who started running when he saw the police members on foot. The members gave chase and apprehended the adult male.

A total of 17 packets of tik, 11 mandrax tablets, 22 units of heroin and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in his possession

Once charged the suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrate’s Courts.

Furthermore members of the Worcester Anti-Gang Unit followed up information of a firearm at a premises in Avian Park on Monday morning 10 April 2023.

The members searched the Kwevoel Street premises where a male tried to evade arrest. The suspect was arrested and searched and a 9mm pistol was found in his possession.

The suspect will appear in the Worcester Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
