A 40 year old off duty AGU member was shot and killed on the night of 17 August 2019, in Franschhoek in an incident that is the subject of an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigation.

It is alleged the deceased member was at a premises in Skool Street when a group of community members descended in a confrontational manner and subsequently left. Police were called to the house including a 41 year old colleague of the deceased.

When the shooting occurred which claimed the life of Sergeant David Hoffman, his colleague was with him. The 41 year old member has since been detained and an IPID investigation is underway.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Sindile Mfazi has expressed condolences to the family of Sergeant Hoffman on behalf of the SAPS management.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has confirmed that it is investigating the murder of an anti-gang unit member at Franschhoek in the Boland. This follows the fatal shooting of 40 year old Sergeant David Hoffman.

IPID spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa, says Hoffman was shot in the head during an alleged altercation with a colleague. He says the suspect is expected to appear in the Franschhoek Magistrates Court tomorrow. ” There was a social braai on a private premises which was attended by both the deceased and the suspect. Both the deceased and the suspect were attached to the anti-gang unit and the two police officials were off duty. It is alleged that during the proceedings of the 41 year old suspect pulled his firearm and shot his 40 year old colleague. ”
