7 life terms for Century City serial killer

Western Cape High Court Judge President Judge John Hlophe on Thursday sentenced the so-called Century City serial killer and rapist to seven life terms, plus 40 years direct imprisonment.

Thirty two-year-old Kahangayi Sedumedi showed no emotion as his defence lawyer Morne Calitz confirmed that his client understood the terms of his plea and sentence agreement.

Hlophe quipped: “This is the longest sentence I have ever had to impose in 22 years. I am glad its by agreement.”

Sedumedi faced 23 charges, including rape, murder, assault, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.

He pleaded guilty to 21 charges, including eight of rape, four of murder and three of kidnapping. A further two charges were withdrawn.

Sedumedi’s name will be added to the national sexual offences register, while he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

He was arrested in January 2015 after the naked bodies of several women were discovered face down with their hands bound behind their backs.

The victims bodies were all found in a field along Acre Road near the Century City train station in Cape Town.

He committed the crimes from November 2011 until his arrest in January 2015.
