Nyanga cluster police remain determined to rid the communities of the generators of crime as they seized six unlicensed firearms and ammunition that are used to commit serious crimes.

On 13 March 2021, Elsies River police acted on information about a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, they arrested the male suspect and found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in his possession.

On Friday afternoon 12 March 2021, Manenberg police were in Storms River Road conducting stop and searches operations when they heard gunshots. They drove towards the sound of the gunshots and saw a man running with a firearm in his hands and pursued him. A 22-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, on Friday evening police from Samora Machel apprehended a 25-year-old man for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile on Friday evening police were tracing a suspect in Avonwood, Elsies River. Upon their arrival at the address, they saw a suspect with a firearm in his hand. He fled in an effort to evade arrest but police caught up with him. The suspect, aged 39 is facing charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, ammunition and drugs.

In another incident on Friday, Elsies River police found an abandoned bag at the Avonwood sports ground containing a firearm with serial number filed off. Police will continue to investigate in order to arrest the suspect.

On Thursday, Elsies River police confiscated two bullet proof inners with ceramic bullet proof plates and five shotgun rounds after they acted on information in Avonwood. Police are still in pursuit of the suspect whose identity is known.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday 10 March 2021, the Elsies River Crime Prevention Unit followed up on information about an unlicensed firearm at Amailia Court, Avonwood, Elsies River. Upon their arrival they searched the suspect and a firearm with no serial number ammunition was found in his possession. A 22-year-old man was arrested and he appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s court on Friday.

Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the members for ensuring that unlicensed firearms and ammunition are off the streets.
