SAPS members’ efforts to rid communities of unlicensed firearms and ammunition yielded good results this week. In the early hours of 2 July 2020 at about 03:00, members of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit were conducting patrols in the Lavender Hill area when they noticed two males walking along Welton Road.

Upon noticing the marked police vehicle, they turned around and tried to flee, however the members pursued them. The suspects were apprehended and a 9mm pistol with ammunition were discovered in their possession. They are facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and, once they are charged, the suspects, aged 26 and 27, will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.

Meanwhile, on 1 July 2020 Athlone police attended to a complaint about three men who were robbing people in a taxi in Belgravia, Athlone.

The suspects tried to evade arrest but all three men aged 29, 32 and 39 were apprehended with the help of Law Enforcement officers and they are facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and robbery. They were found in possession of a shotgun and two cellular telephones which they robbed from the complainants.

The suspects made an appearance at the Athlone Magistrates’ Court.
