The SAPS members participated in efforts to rid the communities of one of the province’s crime generator by seizing several firearms this week.

Members attached to Flying Squad were conducting crime prevention patrols in the Mfuleni area on 4 February 2020, when they acted on information about a maroon Mercedes Benz that was driving in the Blue Downs area, the owner of the vehicle was wanted by the police in a Nyanga murder case.

The members approached the vehicle and upon searching it they found prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Two suspects, aged 21 and 29, male and female respectively were arrested and are due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court once they are charged.

Meanwhile, members of Maitland Flying Squad received information about a vehicle with firearms on the N1 freeway in Kraaifontein. The vehicle was pulled over at a garage on N1. One suspect was found in possession of two firearms, a 9mm pistol and a Norinco pistol, and the other suspect was found in possession of an unknown firearm.

Members also seized 17 rounds of ammunition and two magazines. Two suspects, aged 29 and 35, were arrested on cases of possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The suspects will appear in Kuilsriver Magistrates Court once charged.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata commended the members for their dedication to ensure unlicensed firearms are off the streets.
